It's a challenge to balance a wilderness trail system with things like maps and signs. FLT is supposed to look like a forest and not a city street. Having said that, don't expect a map at every intersection - the arrows have that job. The maps are placed at 'decision points' where riders might need help deciding to go out further or head back.
